Two weeks ago my family and I left on an adventure. We decided to road-trip from Colorado up through Jackson Wyoming and onto our former home, Seattle Washington, with several stops in between. Ah the best laid plans of mice and men… Needless to say the journey proved a bit long for a 5 and 8 year old (as well as two late-thirty-something’s), and we came back from our journey a few days earlier than planned. Not to worry though, the adventure was still just that – an adventure. We got to visit some beautiful land, eat delicious food, hang out with old friends, see some wildlife, and enjoy some much needed time as a family. Easily the family part was the best part of the entire trip. We get so busy with work and life and school and activities that we forget to actually “be” together sometimes. The lesson was learned in that for sure. We need more time together. We need more movie & pizza nights. We need more long talks (just perhaps not over a 9 hour car trip). We need to walk hand in hand along a forgotten path. We need to ask questions, explore answers, and seek the joy in just being together.
Perhaps my favorite day of our trip was watching our boys at the beach – Golden Gardens in Seattle. The beach that Shawn and I walked along so many times in our early years together, collecting beach glass and enjoying gorgeous sunsets. The beach where we held our pre-wedding bbq with our closest friends and family. The beach we visited when we went through a difficult loss in our journey to parenthood. The beach we walked along with our 1 year old son the last night we lived as a family in Seattle. That part of our trip was so easy, so healing, so peaceful…
